Pop Rocks were developed in 1956 by General Foods researcher, William A. Mitchell. They were first introduced to the market in 1975 for $.15. This amazing candy makes the popping sound, because tiny air pockets of carbon dioxide release from the tiny candy bites when they melt in your mouth. There were only three original flavors. They were grape, orange, and cherry. At first, they were popular to kids because they would mix them with any carbonated drink and eat it, causing their stomachs to "explode"! Later down the road, a little kid, who was famous from the LIFE commercials, died from this.
In 1979, General Foods was soon receiving many letters and told people around the nation that this would cause nothing to happen to the body. The kids would burp, at the most. Around 1983, Pop Rocks were taken off the market because they were getting to much pressure. Kraft then bought the product in 1985 from General Foods and called them "Action Candy". Pop Rocks are now back in the open for everyone to buy under their original marketed name Zeta Espacial S.A. and is distributed by Pop Rocks, Inc.
Strawberry, Cherry, Fruit Punch, and Watermelon; Xtreme Sour Apple, Xtreme Sour Berry, Bubblegum, Cotton Candy and Strawberry Sugar-Free flavors are available. http://www.poprockscandy.com/.htmlpop_rocks.htm
