Kurt Alder

Alder was born in Königshütte, Upper Silesia, an industrial town, and received his childhood education there until after WW I. He then moved with his family due to political reasons. Alder began reading chemistry in 1922 at Berlin University, and continued his later studies at Kiel University, graduating with his PhD in 1926. In 1930, Alder was appointed reader of chemistry at Kiel University by the Faculty of Philosophy. He was promoted 4 years later to lecturer. Alder then left Kiel to take up the position of head of the science laboratories department of the I. G. Farben Industrie in Leverkusen, where he worked with synthetic rubber. In 1940, Alder was appointed Chair for Experimental Chemistry and Chemical Technology at Cologne University, and became Pricnicpal of the Institute of Chemistry.
