John Pemberton was a druggist/ chemist from Columbus, Georgia who created coca cola. He started working on a coca wine, which is and alcoholic drink mixed with coca, kola nut, and damiana and it was called Pembertons's French Wine Coca. He had a background of drug addiction, depression and aclcoholism. His drink was advertised as being particularly beneficial for women whose jobs caused nervous prostration, irregularities of the stomach, and bowels and kidneys that needed a nerve tonic. In 1885 Pemberton made a nonalcoholic alternative to his French Wine Coca.
Frank Mason Robinson came up with the name Coca-Cola. Pemberton made many health claims for his product and marketed it as delicous, refreshing, exhilarating, and invigorationg. He also said it would releive headaches, exhaustion, and it would calm nerves. Asa Candler bought the business in 1888 and in 1894 coke was sold in bottles for the first time. During World War ll, bottling plants were set up in Europe, Africa, and the Pacific.
