In the United States weather balloons are released at 70 different locations, in the world there are 700 locations including the United States. All these locations release the balloons at the same time each day, 6 and 18:00 hours Greenwich Mean Time. These balloons provide the data needed to predict the weather forecasts around the world. The rubber balloon is filled with helium or hydrogen, which then floats up to a height of 30 km, because these gasses are lighter than air. At 30 km, the balloon bursts because the volume is too great. This then sends a parachute out with the measuring equipment. This box measures temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure. The relative humidity is gathered by a polymer that absorbs water. This then triggers an electrical resistance and the resistance is measured and sent back to the scientists.
