V.I.P. or V.I.C. in Chemistry
A V.I.P. in chemistry is Alexander Parkes. When he was young he worked for George and Henry Elkington, who created and patented the electroplating proccess. In 1841, Parkes took out his first patent for a proccess of electroplating on delicate peices of art. In 1850 Parkes patented the Parkes Proccess, a process that removed silver from lead ores in an economical way. In 1855 Parkes created the first man-made thermoplastic. The plastic was based on nitrocellulose and with an ethonal solvant, the plastic Parkesine, or somtimes called, synthetic ivory. In 1866 Parkes set up The Parkesine Company to mass produce Parkesine. The Parkesine Company closed in 1868 due to the high expence to produce Parkesine, and the fact it cracked easily, and was highly flammable. Parkes Parkesine was later developed into the better form of Xylonite, invented by Daniel Spill. (Info. from About.com, Wikipedia.com)
