Doctor Joseph Priestley 1733-1804 by Laurel Jordan

In 1767 Doctor Joseph Priestly was the first person to create a drinkable glass of carbonated water, also known as soda pop. Carbon dioxide is the gas in pop that makes it fizz. The three main ingredients of pop, carbon dioxide, syrup, and water, are mixed together and put in a bottle. The empty space at the top is filled with carbon dioxide, to prevent the dissolved CO2 from escaping.
Joseph Priestly is credited with his discovery of oxygen and known for his writings on electricity. He also discovered several gases. He had a determination to defend the phlogiston theorem and was eventually isolated in the scientific community. He died at age 81. He made many contributions to the scientific world and with out them we would not have the fizzy drink that so many people love.
